The Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which LAUSD implemented in 2012, are the biggest educational change in the last twenty years. The CCSS brings a new focus on depth (not breadth), college and career readiness, and rigor along with new year-end summative assessments. In this course, participants will learn how to effectively navigate these changes by learning key, actionable strategies aligned to the CCSS in math and English Language Arts (ELA). Participants will also learn how to effectively and skillfully infuse the CCSS ELA skills into other subject areas, including science, math, social studies, arts, career and technical education, and physical education. This course focuses on how to provide frequent, targeted formative assessment, differentiate instruction, infuse real-world problems, modify current practices to meet the needs of the CCSS, and reach all learners in the classroom. Finally, the course contains strategies for participants to help parents understand and support the implementation of the CCSS in their child’s classroom, so they can support their children at home and at school. The course combines research-based best practices and a variety of instructional formats including interactive presentations, readings, annotated classroom videos, interactive activities, application activities, and discussion boards, which are designed to be directly applicable to the participant’s teaching practice.
