The Grade K-5 Common Core State Standards in Math (CCSSM) outline what students need to know, understand, and be able to do in order to prepare for middle school, high school, college, and the real world, but they do not capture the art and science of teaching nor the knowledge of students and community that a teacher brings to the classroom. This course bridges that gap by providing participants with best practices for interweaving the CCSSM into their classroom practice and utilizing the Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMP) to meet the diverse educational needs of LAUSD students and to promote a “growth mindset.” Participants will also learn how to support and encourage special needs students, English Language Learners, and gifted and talented students as they strive to meet CCSSM learning progressions and the SMP. Finally the participants will gain strategies for integrating discipline literacy into their math instruction and building students’ metacognition, collaborative skills, and perseverance. The course combines research-based best practices and a variety of instructional formats including interactive presentations, readings, annotated classroom videos, interactive activities, application activities, and discussion boards, which are designed to be directly applicable to the participant’s teaching practice.
