Los Angeles is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and every LAUSD school has a diverse, multicultural population. As this diversity continues to grow, all LAUSD teachers face the challenges of effectively teaching cross-culturally and supporting culturally diverse learners who are at greater risk of failure and/or dropout. This course teaches participants what cultural identity is and how an individual’s cultural norms, attitudes, and perceptions impact teaching and learning. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to identify cultural biases in classroom activities and materials, design culturally sensitive curricula, and communicate effectively with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The course provides all the tools participants need to create culturally inclusive classroom environments and develop best practices for handling culturally sensitive scenarios with students and families. This course combines research-based best practices and a variety of instructional formats including interactive presentations, readings, annotated classroom videos, interactive activities, application activities, and discussion boards, which are designed to be directly applicable to the participant’s teaching practice and support teaching with cultural competence.
